Hello Ellie and welcome to Hunter! Tell me a little about yourself.
Hello! My name is Ellie – I grew up on the North Devon coast and can normally be found out and about exploring, eating, or tinkering with some creative project. Recent haunts and jaunts of mine include exploring Cornwall’s Port Gaverne, eating all the garlic mayonnaise, and rewriting old-fashioned board games for a more modern audience. I’m enthusiastic, playful, and really enjoy tackling a creative challenge alongside positive people.
We’re all about creativity, so that’s great to hear. Could you tell us a little bit about your background?
I started out as a junior copywriter at a marketing technology company, steadily expanding into the more strategic side of things and managing a team of writers. A mix of freelance work across agencies led me to a creative communications agency where I headed up the content function, specialising in conceptual copy, tone of voice work and campaign ideation.
How did you get into copywriting and why do you do it?
Being a copywriter isn’t always easy, so I sometimes question why I do it. There’s the people not knowing what I do (“do you work in copyright law?”), the being brought in last minute or briefed briefly, and above all the infinitely subjective nature of what makes words good (and the quest to write them). But in difficulty lies challenge and in challenge lies excitement.
I fell into copywriting after university, but I think it’s always where I would have ended up as, when I really break it down, words and ideas are my two favourite things. Simple, but true.
You’ve recently joined Hunter, so what has your initial experience been like so far?
It’s been brilliant so far. I’m only two weeks in, so it’s early days, but everyone has been very welcoming. I’ve already gotten started on some projects and am doing my best to be a sponge and just get stuck in. I may not know everyone’s names yet or how everything works, but I’m enjoying getting to know the team and the Hunter way of life.
What are you most looking forward to during your time at Hunter?
All sorts! But in particular, I’m looking forward to shaping and growing our in-house capability and flying the flag for words. Equally, to have both a talented creative team AND talented strategy team all under one roof is very exciting, so I’m keen to see how I can work closely with both. I’ve always been a keen collaborator, especially alongside designers and art directors, so am eager to get to know the team better and see what we can produce together.
Where do you see yourself and Hunter in five years?
One of the main reasons I joined Hunter was because it’s clear that it’s at a compelling point of evolution and expansion – creatively, strategically, digitally, and beyond. I want to be a part of that transformation and hope that in five years, both Hunter and I are still progressing forward and are just as keen to hone our skills and deliver epic creative work.
